Teaching Jobs at a Community College

A community college is a higher educational institution; which is usually funded and administered publicly by the community itself. These educational institutions are open to all and close to home. These institutions are known in many names. Examples would be Junior college, tribal college, technical college, two-year College, and community college. The name varies from state to state in the United States; as well as in different countries.

Teaching in a community college is both a rewarding and challenging profession. Most faculty members found their work satisfactorily joyful and meaningful. Teachers feel that they have a big role in the community in changing the lives of community residents, especially their students. Another reason why teaching in a community college is both rewarding and challenging is because faculty members are anticipated to be good enough to use modernized and the latest teaching technologies; such as instructional software like Power Point, “smart classroom” equipment; and teaching online or through the other distant learning media.

Teachers in a community college usually have heavier teaching loads than those who are teaching in a complete four-year college. The reason is that teaching is the central role of instructors in a community college. Teaching assistant is not available but student assistants may be on hand in tutoring and may assist on small group work. Most community college award tenure and promote teachers on the basis of experience.

Salaries of teachers in community colleges are comparable with those teaching in a regular college or university that offers four-year courses. In some cases, teachers in a community college receive a higher salary than those in a neighboring regular college. There are a lot of opportunities for a teacher to rise in rank and position in a community college.

Recruitment in the community college depends on a campus-wide mechanism and budget authorization. The recruitment process follows the College Board policy, union agreements and state guidelines.
